Great turnout for the Spring Garden Party! We planted seeds, did general cleaning, made sun prints, and soaked up the sun.

A good Raspberry Year ahead!

The raspberries are now entering their second year of being planted in the Demo Garden. As you can see, there will be many many more offshoot plants this year compared to last. When the time comes for harvest, I know exactly what to do! (make a pie, of course. see a recipe here: http://www.examiner.com/food-in-providence/raspberry-pie-recipe-with-fresh-raspberries)

Composting for the Garden

Our friends at the Met Cafe (part of student dining on campus) showed us their composting system. They compost their vegetable scraps in large containers that are about half full of cut cardboard. Every few days, they turn the veggie scraps with the cardboard. Then, a company picks up the mixture and continues to compost it to completion.

The Spring Garden

We seeded cold hardy vegetables in the raised beds about three weeks ago. The combination of rain and rising temperatures have given us great results! Kale, Spinach, Beets, Lettuce, and Snow Peas are all coming up nicely!

Cold Frame Installation

We assembled the cold frame for the garden back in February. Using the cold frame will allow us to get a jump start on growing summer vegetables. Read about cold frames here: http://www.savvygardener.com/Features/cold_frames-hotbeds.html
